CEC Homespun Terracotta Clay | 600g - Sculpting & Craft

CEC Homespun in terracotta, a warm earth toned clay that reads like fired pottery without a kiln. Air dry clay needs no oven and no kiln: you shape it, leave it, and it hardens on its own. Once dry it takes acrylic paint and varnish without priming.

Compatibility

• Works with: Clay modelling tools, rolling pins, silicone moulds, cutters, wire armatures, MDF and canvas bases
• Pairs well with: Clay tools, acrylic paints, varnish or sealant, craft glue and armature wire
• Not suitable for: Oven or kiln firing, holding water or food, outdoor use unless sealed, or unsupervised use by children under three

Before You Buy

• Air dry clay hardens by losing water, so it shrinks a little as it dries. Build thick pieces around a wire or foil armature, or hollow them out, to stop the outside drying faster than the inside and cracking.
• Drying takes roughly 24 hours for a thin piece and several days for a thick one. Do not speed it up in an oven or in direct sun.
• Reseal the pack the moment you finish. Air dry clay dries out in the packet and cannot be brought back once it goes crumbly.
• Dried pieces are not waterproof and not strong enough to hold water. Seal with varnish if a piece will be handled, and do not use it for anything that touches food. We state no food grade rating for this clay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this clay need baking?
No. It air dries. A thin piece is usually hard in about 24 hours and a thick one takes several days. Do not put it in an oven or in direct sun to speed it up.

Can I paint it?
Yes. Once it is fully dry it takes acrylic paint, poster colour and varnish with no priming. Paint before it is dry through and the surface can lift.

Will it crack?
It can, if a thick piece dries unevenly. Build around a wire or foil armature, keep the walls a similar thickness, and let it dry slowly out of direct sun. Small cracks can be filled with a little wet clay.
